The Women’s National Book Association (WNBA) is a professional literary organization dedicated to supporting women and marginalized voices in the literary world; fighting against censorship; creating community around books; educating about books and the book industry, promoting literacy, and providing professional development. A nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, WNBA exists to connect, educate, advocate and lead in the literary community. Want to know how we got started? In New York City on October 29, 1917, two days after the large women’s suffrage march on Fifth Avenue, a group of female booksellers met for the first time. Excluded from joining the all-male booksellers’ organizations and spurred by the fight for women’s right to vote, they banded together to fight for equality for women. The Women’s National Book Association was formed. Since then, WNBA has been dedicated to supporting women and marginalized voices in the literary world. How can I support WNBA’s upcoming programs? As we have been around for over 100 years, we have a variety of programming that runs through the national organization or through our chapters. WNBA Authentic Voices Fellowship The WNBA Authentic Voices Fellowship is focused on writers, especially writers from communities that have not been represented or been underrepresented in the publishing world and those who have not had access to programs that teach about writing and publishing. The writers embark on a four-month journey with instructors with industry expertise that delves into writing, editing, marketing, querying, and publishing their work. At the end of the program, fellows receive a stipend and are published in an anthology. If you would like to help amplify the voices of those who may not otherwise be heard in today’s publishing world, we encourage you to make a donation that will go specifically to the WNBA Authentic Voices program. General Fund WNBA uses general donations to underwrite other programs (such as the WNBA Award and Great Group Reads), events, educational projects, and advocacy, such as fighting book banning. To support us in these and similar efforts, you can make a donation to our general fund . We thank you for your support of WNBA and our mission!
